Children in Greeneville and Greene County, Tennessee, who are food insecure will benefit from funds raised at the Derby Day on Main Event on May 4, 2024. The event was held at the General Morgan Inn and Conference Center, Greeneville, Tennessee, and $31,000 was raised during this special event to help feed the Greeneville and Greene County children. Derby Day included food, music, Derby Day-themed games, and more. Awards were given for the best hat, best-dressed man and woman, the best-dressed couple,
Some Derby Day planning committee members recently gathered at the General Morgan Inn to present their donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee. Second Harvest will use the donation to help support Second Harvest’s Child Hunger programs. The latest Map the Meal Gap report from Feeding America shows that 19.7% of children in Greene County may be food insecure, meaning they lack consistent access to the food they need due to family income.
Second Harvest Child Hunger Programs include the Food for Kids Backpack Program, which provides healthy snacks and easily prepared meal items twice monthly for an average of 530 food-insecure children in Greeneville and Greene County. Other Second Harvest Child Hunger Programs in Greene County include the Summer Feeding Program, which distributes food for summer breakfasts and lunches, and Head Start 2 Health, which provides fresh produce and nutrition education for children attending Head Start.
“Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee sincerely appreciates receiving support from Derby Day on Main,” said Kristen Fields Reedy, Development Director. “We especially appreciate the Derby Day Committee’s outstanding efforts in organizing the event to help feed children in their community.”
